No matter what kind of industry you are in, the beginning of a new year can be the perfect time to update and review your company’s current human resource documents and procedures. Doing an annual review of HR procedures, records and compliance are important in order to prevent potential liabilities or lawsuits.

In an article that appeared on the Biz Times website, Jaime Lizotte, HR solutions manager at ComplyRight Inc. suggests a few self-auditing techniques that can help companies be in compliance and ensure that being up-to-date on all current employment laws at the local, state and federal levels.

  • Change your labor law posters annually – Annually, states will send out posters with updated labor law information. There are 75 mandatory poster changes which occur from October into the first quarter of the next calendar year. Check postertracker.com to find a list of all of the necessary posters for your business and how to purchase them.
  • File 1099 tax forms for all Consultants, Contractors & Freelancers – The gig economy has made it to that more and more businesses are using the services of consultants, independent contractors, and freelancers. Each person you worked with who is not considered an employee and who falls under this category requires you to file 1099MISC for the previous year. The deadline for filing and mailing of this form with those individuals is January 31st of the current calendar year. Check with a tax professional in order to correctly classify your workers and avoid fines for misclassification.
  • Schedule Employee and Worker Training Sessions – Because of the increased scrutiny on sexual harassment and assault via the #MeToo movement, it’s important that businesses do everything that they can to ensure that all workers are aware of and compliant with company sexual harassment policies. It’s important that workers feel safe and free from retaliation if they do report an incident.
